11,000 Lundazi Farmers Trained Under EP-JSLP to Boost Sustainable Agriculture

Lundazi District, Eastern Province -16th February 2026-Government has intensified efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation in Eastern Province, with over 11,000 smallholder farmers in Lundazi District trained in Climate-Smart Agriculture-CSA and agroforestry under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP.

The programme, spearheaded by the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment through EP-JSLP with support from the World Bank, seeks to strengthen natural resource management, prevent deforestation and forest degradation, and reduce carbon emissions from the land sector. It also aims to create financial opportunities for communities through carbon credits.

Acting Lundazi District Agricultural Coordinator, Kaposhi Lyandamo, disclosed that the 11,000 beneficiaries include 1,000 Lead Farmers and 10,000 Follower Farmers, who have been trained through the farmer field schools’ model.

Following the training, farmers are now establishing agroforestry tree nurseries using Conservation Agriculture methods as part of scheduled programme activities.

Beneficiaries have expressed gratitude to Government for implementing a programme that is helping them adopt sustainable farming practices, increase productivity, and improve household incomes.

Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Lead Farmer Florence Moyo from Noah Farmer Field School in Chief Mphamba’s area encouraged other farmers across the district to adopt Climate-Smart Agriculture practices, noting that the programme is improving productivity and household incomes.

Meanwhile, Lundazi District Commissioner, Marjorie Banda, has described the programme as critical to reducing deforestation and land degradation in the district while improving rural livelihoods.
Ms. Banda has appealed to cooperating partners to consider investing in agribusiness development to strengthen market linkages between farmers and off-takers.

In other districts, Chama has trained 875 Lead Farmers, including 8,750 Follower Farmers, while Lumezi has benefited 9,350 farmers, including 50 Lead Farmers and 850 Follower Farmers under Climate Smart Agriculture.

The EP-JSLP continues to play a pivotal role in advancing climate resilience, environmental protection, and inclusive economic growth in Eastern Province.
