…Chipata District Takes Bold Steps in Climate Action Through Farmer Field Schools
Yesterday on Breeze 89.3 FM, Chipata District’s EPJSLP radio talk shows continued, featuring insights from the District Agricultural Coordinator’s Senior Agricultural Officer, Charles Bwembya.
Mr.Bwembya shared exciting updates on initiatives aimed at cutting down carbon emissions from agriculture while enhancing productivity and economic opportunities for local communities.
He revealed that an impressive 14,300 farmers in Chipata District are currently engaged in hands-on training in Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA).
This group includes 1,300 lead farmers and 13,000 follower farmers.
He explained that the program employs the Farmer Field School approach to promote the adoption of CSA technologies, which include Ripping and basin making, retaining crop residues, practicing crop rotation and integrating agroforestry.
“The farmer field school is a fantastic extension method where lead farmers gather to learn CSA practices through practical field experiments, and then they pass on that knowledge to their follower farmers,” Mr. Bwembya noted.
He also mentioned that 52 Farmer Field Schools have been set up across all 35 agricultural camps in the district, with each school consisting of 25 lead farmers.
