Over 200,000 Hectares in Eastern Province to Adopt Climate-Smart Farming
By Gloria Siwisha of NAIS
The Ministry of Agriculture in Eastern Province has begun converting over 200,000 hectares of smallholder farmland to Climate Smart Agriculture-CSA practices.
The initiative is supported by the World Bank-funded Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EPJSLP) and is being implemented through farmer field schools, where farmers are trained in modern practices such as ripping, crop rotation and agroforestry.
The programme aims to increase productivity, strengthen farmers’ resilience to climate change and reduce carbon emissions from agricultural activities.
Eastern Provincial Agricultural Coordinator Victor Zulu says 678 farmer field schools have already been established, with more than 200,000 farmers trained in CSA practices.
Meanwhile, Katete District Agricultural Coordinator Kabange Masenga says the programme is already producing positive results for local farming communities.
