Cultivating Change: Lusangazi Farmers Inspired to Lead the Way in Climate-Smart Agriculture

Lusangazi District came alive today as lead farmers gathered for an inspiring exposure field visit at Village 19 in Nzumwa Agricultural Camp, Chinika Block, under Chief Kawaza’s chiefdom.
The event brought together passionate farmers eager to learn, share, and grow through practical, farmer-led experiences in Climate-Smart Agriculture-CSA.
At the heart of the visit was host and lead farmer Boldwin Banda, whose remarkable success stood as a beacon of possibility.
With over 10 hectares of soya beans and 2 hectares of maize cultivated using CSA practices such as ripping and agroforestry, his farm demonstrated how innovation, commitment, and knowledge can transform livelihoods.

His journey, supported under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP, is proof that sustainable farming is not just a concept but a reality within reach.
The event was graced by Principal Agricultural Officer Kelvin Chinama and brought together key stakeholders including, seed companies, and district agricultural officials led by District Agricultural Coordinator Friday Sikombe.
Their presence reaffirmed the strong collaboration driving agricultural transformation in the region.
Adding to the inspiration was a female lead farmer from Mikoko Village, Eunice Mbewe, who showcased her own success story cultivating one hectare of maize integrated with agroforestry using ripping technology.

Her achievement highlighted the growing role of women in leading agricultural innovation and resilience in the district.
The exposure visit was more than just a tour, it was a platform for empowerment.
Farmers engaged in meaningful knowledge exchange, learning not only improved farming techniques but also how to effectively manage Farmer Field Schools, encourage peer learning, and scale up CSA adoption in their communities.
Participants left motivated and energized, with a renewed sense of purpose.
Many praised the Government of Zambia and its cooperating partners, especially the World Bank, for their continued support in promoting sustainable agriculture.

Both host farmers encouraged their fellow farmers to take climate-smart agriculture seriously, emphasizing that the benefits higher yields, improved soil health, and resilience to climate change are well worth the effort.
As Lusangazi farmers return to their fields, they carry more than just knowledge, they carry inspiration, confidence, and a shared vision for a more productive and sustainable future.
Together, they are not just farming, they are leading change.
