The Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Program-EP-JSLP continues to strengthen collaboration with traditional leadership in advancing climate action and sustainable land management.
Following a courtesy call on His Royal Highness Paramount Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni people at Ekuphendukeni Palace in Chipata District, the EP-JSLP team, led by Assistant Environmental and Social Inclusion Officer Ms. Lucy Mbewe, reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with chiefdom authorities.
The engagement focused on the rollout of Chiefdom Emissions Reduction Coordinating Committees-CERCC and the development of Chiefdom Emissions Reduction Performance Plans-CERPP.
After a successful community sensitisation process, elections for the Community Emissions Reduction Coordination Committee-CERCC were conducted, and the newly elected members were formally presented to His Royal Highness Paramount Chief Mpezeni.
The Paramount Chief officially endorsed the committee by signing the Endorsement Performance Agreement, affirming its legitimacy and readiness to drive programme implementation.
In his remarks, His Royal Highness emphasized unity, teamwork, and inclusive participation,
“This committee must work as one, with a shared vision for the development of our chiefdom and the wellbeing of our people.” Paramount Chief Mpezeni said.
The Traditional Leader further called on the committee to work closely with headmen and headwomen across the chiefdom.
“Engage all our headmen and headwomen, because their involvement is key to the success of this programme in our communities.” he added.
He also urged the committee to remain committed and focused, adding, “Through unity and collective effort, we can achieve meaningful and lasting results for our environment and our people.”
The traditional leader reaffirmed his full support for the EP-JSLP, highlighting the importance of strong collaboration between leadership and communities in addressing environmental challenges.
