Eastern Province Upscales Climate-Smart Forestry Training in Chipata

A major step toward sustainable forest management is underway in Chipata, where 12 Forest Officers are participating in intensive training on climate-smart plantation management.

The initiative is designed to strengthen expertise in plantation planning, low-carbon practices, and sustainable timber production supporting Zambia’s National Forestry Policy 2025 while safeguarding indigenous forests.

Blending classroom instruction with field-based practical sessions, the training is facilitated by national experts from the Forestry Department’s Forest Research Wing, and experienced plantation managers from ZAFFICO.

Additional technical support is being provided by Monitoring, Reporting and Verification-MRV and GIS specialists from the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP Programme Implementation Unit, alongside forestry officers at both provincial and headquarters levels.

Beyond the hands-on plantation training, participants also conducted a field visit to Masupe Nursery, gaining practical insights into seedling production and nursery management practices critical to successful reforestation efforts.

The programme spans six Protected Forest Areas and will contribute to the development of practical plantation management plans, including a model plan for Mindola Plantation in Katete.

Implemented under the World Bank-supported Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP, the initiative is set to enhance carbon sequestration, strengthen sustainable timber supply, and unlock carbon financing opportunities for local communities.
