FROM 15 TO 52 BAGS! CSA TRANSFORMS FARMER YIELDS IN CHIPATA
Lead farmers at Lutembwe Agriculture Camp in Chipata District are celebrating the socio-economic benefits of adopting Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) technologies, with some recording remarkable increases in crop yields.
Constance Kanyinji, a lead farmer and member of Lutembwe Farmer Field School, says her maize harvest has more than tripled. During the 2025/2026 farming season, she harvested 52 bags of 50kg maize from one acre, up from just 15 bags using traditional ridge-making methods.
Other farmers say CSA practices such as ripping, use of organic manure and agroforestry are helping reduce labour demands and production costs while improving productivity.
Farmers also praised the Farmer Field School (FFS) approach for strengthening peer learning, practical problem-solving and confidence in testing new technologies directly in their own fields.
The Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EPJSLP) continues to support extension services and farmer learning across the district.
Chipata has 1,300 EPJSLP-supported lead farmers, each expected to support 10 follower farmers, alongside 52 Farmer Field Schools.
