LUNDAZI & LUMEZI COMMUNITIES URGED TO EMBRACE CLIMATE-SMART FARMING AND FOREST CONSERVATION

Communities in Lundazi and Lumezi districts have been encouraged to embrace Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA), agroforestry and sustainable forest management practices to build resilience to climate change, improve agricultural productivity and protect natural resources.

The call was made during an Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EP-JSLP)-supported live radio programme on Chikaya Radio, which brought together key stakeholders to share knowledge, experiences, success stories and practical solutions for sustainable agriculture and landscape management.

The programme featured EP-JSLP District Project Officer for Lundazi and Lumezi, Mr. Davison Kamuli, and Ministry of Agriculture Mcheleka Agriculture Camp Extension Officer, Ms. Essence Zimba, who explained the importance of integrating agroforestry into Climate-Smart Agriculture.

The programme also featured representatives from Community Markets for Conservation-COMACO, an EP-JSLP nested partner, and the Department of Forests, who are working with EP-JSLP to promote and implement sustainable forest management in the district.

The discussions highlighted the importance of protecting forests, integrating trees into farming systems and adopting sustainable land-use practices to reduce emissions, strengthen climate resilience and improve livelihoods.

The panel further emphasized the use of improved cooking stoves as an affordable solution to reduce unnecessary cutting of trees for charcoal and firewood. The stoves can be constructed using locally available materials, making them accessible to communities.

The role of Community Forest Management Groups (CFMGs) was also highlighted in disseminating information on forest conservation, sustainable forest management and the benefits of improved cooking stoves.

When farmers, communities, government and partners work together, sustainable landscapes become possible.

📻 Listen. Learn. Act. Tune in to EP-JSLP-supported radio programmes for more insights on climate-smart agriculture, forest conservation and sustainable livelihoods.
