The rollout of Chiefdom Emissions Reduction Coordinating Committees-CERCC and the development of Chiefdom Emissions Reduction Performance Plans-CERPP has now officially commenced across all 56 chiefdoms under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Program-EP-JSLP.

In Lundazi, the process kick-started with a courtesy call to His Royal Highness Senior Chief Mwase of the Chewa speaking people people, where a delegation of officers from EP-JSLP, Provincial Chiefs and Traditional Affairs, District Planning Office, Forestry Department, BioCarbon Partners-BCP, and Community-Based Natural Resource Management-CBNRM received a warm welcome.

The mission is being led by EP-JSLP Environmental and Social Inclusion Officer, Mr. Godfrey Phiri, who emphasized the importance of establishing inclusive, transparent, and accountable governance structures to coordinate emissions reduction activities and sustainable land management at chiefdom level.
And his Royal Highness Senior Chief Mwase expressed

strong support for the initiative, noting that the CERCC will ensure representation of key stakeholders such as Community Resource Boards-CRBs, Community Forest Management Groups-CFMGs, cooperatives, women and youth groups, and other local actors strengthening coordinated development within the chiefdom.

The traditional leader further stressed the need for comprehensive training and orientation of committee members to promote transparency and accountability, especially in managing community resources and future carbon revenue flows.

Meanwhile, the Induna also highlighted the importance of a well-structured committee and strong oversight mechanisms to ensure prudent management and effective supervision of resources.

The ongoing engagements mark a significant milestone in strengthening chiefdom-level governance systems and advancing inclusive, community-led climate action and sustainable development across Eastern Province.
