Chief Tembwe Champions Forest Conservation in Chama

Chief Tembwe of the Senga-speaking people in Chama District has reaffirmed his commitment to protecting forests and promoting the sustainable management of natural resources in his chiefdom.

Speaking during the formulation of the Chiefdom Emissions Reduction Coordinating Committee (CERCC) under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EP-JSLP), the traditional leader pledged support for initiatives aimed at reducing forest destruction and strengthening environmental stewardship at community level.

And EP-JSLP Environmental and Social Inclusion Officer Godfrey Phiri emphasized the importance of formally establishing the CERCC under Chief Tembwe’s Chiefdom, with the Chief serving as Patron.

Mr.Phiri noted that the committee should comprise representatives from various community structures to ensure effective coordination, implementation, accountability, and management of resources dedicated to emissions reduction and forest conservation activities.

The development is part of the EP-JSLP’s wider effort to establish Community Emissions Reduction Coordination Committees (CERCC) and Community Emissions Reduction Performance Plans (CERPPs) across all 56 chiefdoms in Eastern Province, enhancing community ownership, accountability, and performance.

Together, communities are taking decisive steps toward a greener, more sustainable future for Eastern Province.
