COMMUNITIES URGED TO TAKE LEAD IN FOREST CONSERVATION THROUGH CFMGs
Monday’s EPJSLP-supported radio talk show, anchored by Febby Phiri of Breeze FM, featured Chipangali District Forestry Officer Moses Daka (Centre), alongside Kanyanja Agricultural Assistant Josphat Mwanza (Left).
During the programme, Mr Daka underscored the importance of community members joining Community Forest Management Groups (CFMGs), describing them as a key mechanism for increasing forest cover and strengthening community-led forest conservation.
He said CFMGs empower local communities by giving them legally recognised rights and responsibilities to protect, manage and sustainably utilise natural resources within their communities.
Mr Daka encouraged more community members to participate in CFMGs, emphasising that active community involvement is essential to safeguarding forests and promoting sustainable management of natural resources.
Royd Mulilo, an EPJSLP beneficiary from Chief Mnukwa’s Chiefdom in Chipangali District, commended the Government for spearheading the establishment of CFMGs.
Mr Mulilo, who is also Chairperson of Mwazyangulu Community Forest Management Group, said the initiative has not only strengthened community participation in forest conservation but has also significantly reduced tree cutting for charcoal production.
Earlier, Kanyanja Agricultural Assistant Josphat Mwanza disclosed that the Department of Agricultural Services in Chipata District is promoting agroforestry among EPJSLP beneficiaries as part of efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the land sector and promote sustainable land management.
He said agroforestry integrates trees with crops and other agricultural practices such as minimum tillage and crop rotation, helping farmers improve land productivity while contributing to environmental conservation and climate change mitigation.
