East Farmers Benefit from Farmer Field Schools

Over 373 thousand small scale farmers in Eastern Province that underwent climate smart agriculture training in farmer field schools are expected to record a bumper harvest.

The farmers were trained under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme.

Eastern Province Principal Agricultural Officer Kelvin Chinama, who is part of the project implementation unit, said the farmers are increasingly transforming their livelihoods through Climate-Smart Agriculture.

Mr Chinama was speaking during the ongoing monitoring of the farmer exposure field days in Petauke and Lusangazi Districts.

And Lusangazi District Agricultural Coordinator Friday Sikombe said the farmer exposure field visits are meant to encourage farmers to share experiences.

Mr Sikombe said it is clear that most farmers have started to adhere to new technologies.

Meanwhile, one of the farmers who was trained at a farmer field school, Godwin Banda, said climate smart agriculture is not labour intensive.

Mr Banda said he is one of the farmers that will record a bumper harvest this year.

This is according to a statement issued by EP-JSLP Communications Officer Creavat Chituta.
