Eastern Province Minister Calls for Increased Forest Conservation Efforts
Eastern Province Minister Peter Phiri has called for the formation of more community forest management groups to supplement government efforts in conserving forests that are under pressure from human activities.
Mr Phiri said the province currently has only 91 community forest management groups, which are not enough to effectively protect forest resources.
He urged traditional leaders across the region to actively participate in forest conservation, highlighting the potential economic benefits through carbon market initiatives.
Mr Phiri also appealed to the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme to support community-driven initiatives that promote sustainable forest conservation and management.
The remarks were delivered on his behalf by Provincial Deputy Permanent Secretary Dr Lewis Mwape during the International Day of Forests, held under the theme Forests and Economies.
Eastern Province Principal Forest Officer Catherine Zulu encouraged young people to take a keen interest in forest conservation to help secure a sustainable future for the country.
Meanwhile, World Vision Development Facilitator for Katete District Sarah Mwangelwa and Munyeku Charcoal Brigades Director Chris Mbewe reaffirmed their commitment to supporting government efforts in forest conservation.
The event was characterized by poems, debates, and sketches performed by pupils from various schools.
