Farmers Lead the Way: Peer Learning Boosts Climate-Smart Agriculture in Eastern Province!

Lead and follower farmers at Mtukuzi Agricultural Camp in Petauke District came together for a successful exposure field day next to the Mtukuzi Farmer Field Demonstration site.

Farmers from Chileka Block exchanged knowledge on Climate-Smart Agriculture-CSA practices such as ripping and agroforestry under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme EP-JSLP programme.

The event was attended by Corteva Agriscience, Western Mbuto, Synergy Seed, Bayer, SeedCo, Zamseed, and other agro-dealers, along with agricultural officers from Petauke District, EP-JSLP Communications Officer Creavat Chituta, Senior Field Crops Officer George Zulu, and farmers from various Farmer Field Schools.

Principal Agricultural Officer Kelvin Chinama, who also attended the event, shared that EP-JSLP has reached 186,450 farmers, including 16,950 lead farmers, each of whom trains at least 10 others rapidly accelerating the adoption of CSA technologies across communities.

Lead farmer and Lusinde Camp Chairperson, Mwelwa Mumba, has cultivated 10 hectares of maize using CSA practices, showcasing how climate-smart farming can boost productivity and provide access to farming equipment, transport, and other business assets.

Acting Petauke District Agricultural Coordinator Maston Tembo reported that 118 lead farmers recently participated in an exposure field day in Nyika Block and encouraged farmers to emulate successful CSA adopters.

Through peer learning and practical training, EP-JSLP is driving food security, environmental conservation, and climate resilience across Eastern Province.
