Forests Power Economies: Eastern Province Marks International Day of Forests 2026

Eastern Province joined the rest of the world in commemorating the International Day of Forests under the theme “Forests and Economies,” highlighting the critical role forests play in supporting livelihoods and driving sustainable development.

The event was graced by Eastern Province Minister Peter Phiri, represented by Deputy Permanent Secretary Dr. Lewis Mwape, who emphasized the importance of protecting forests as a foundation for economic growth and community well-being.

He noted that forests are not only environmental assets but also key contributors to household incomes and long-term prosperity.
Forests in the province continue to support thousands of households by providing fuel, food, and income, while creating employment opportunities through activities such as beekeeping, carpentry, and small-scale enterprises particularly benefiting youth and women.
With 91 Community Forest Management Groups managing over 1.7 million hectares, local communities are playing an active role in sustainable forest management and conservation efforts.
However, concerns remain over rising deforestation driven by illegal logging, charcoal production, agricultural expansion, and bush fires threats that not only degrade the environment but also undermine economic opportunities.
Through the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EPJSLP, with support from the World Bank, efforts are underway to restore degraded landscapes, promote sustainable practices, and strengthen community livelihoods.
Additionally, carbon development partners such as COMACO and BioCarbon Partners, working as nested partners under EPJSLP, are supporting climate-smart livelihoods and forest conservation through carbon financing initiatives.
Entertainment and Youth Participation
The commemoration also featured vibrant entertainment, including a school drama performance that captivated the audience with messages on forest conservation and environmental protection. Learners creatively highlighted the dangers of deforestation and the importance of sustainable natural resource management.
School Debate Competition
A key highlight of the event was an inter-school debate on forests and climate change between Chipata Day Secondary School and Chizongwe Technical Secondary School. The debate showcased strong arguments and impressive public speaking skills from both teams.
Chizongwe Technical Secondary School, popularly known as “CHIZ Metals,” emerged as the winners, scooping first prize, while Chipata Day Secondary School secured second place.
The award for Best Debater was won by Georgina Phiri from Chipata Day Secondary School for her outstanding performance.
Prize Giving Ceremony
During the prize-giving ceremony, the Guest of Honour commended the learners for their confidence, knowledge, and passion for environmental issues.
He encouraged young people to continue advocating for forest conservation, noting that they are key stakeholders in securing a sustainable future.
As the province reflects on this important day, stakeholders have been urged to take collective responsibility in protecting forests for future generations.
Protect forests today, secure livelihoods tomorrow.
