From Poacher to Pioneer: The Inspiring Journey of Patson Nkhata

At 62 years old, Patson Nkhata of Chief Zumwanda area in Lumezi District, Eastern Province, stands as a powerful symbol of transformation, resilience, and hope.
Once involved in poaching, today Patson is a lead farmer championing Climate Smart Agriculture through agroforestry restoring the very environment he once depended on for survival.
His story is proof that change is possible, and that sustainable livelihoods can rewrite futures.
Through mentorship and training from Community Markets for Conservation-COMACO, a nested partner in the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EPJSLP, Patson embraced sustainable farming practices that are improving his land, boosting productivity, and protecting natural resources.
On his farm, he now plants Gliricidia, Musangu (Faidherbia albida), and other soil-improving trees as part of agroforestry practices that enhance soil fertility, increase crop yields, and reduce emissions.
“I have learned that protecting wildlife and forests is protecting our own future. Today, my farm feeds my family, and I am proud to teach others what I have learned,” says Patson Nkhata.
As a respected lead farmer, Patson is actively encouraging fellow farmers across Lumezi District and beyond to adopt Climate Smart Agriculture and transition to sustainable livelihoods.
“Change begins with one decision. If I can transform my life at 62, anyone can,” he adds.
His journey aligns with the broader goals of the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EPJSLP, supported by the World Bank, which promotes sustainable land management, forest conservation, and community resilience.
Patson Nkhata is not just growing crops, he is growing a legacy of conservation, leadership, and hope for future generations.
