From Small Beginnings to Big Harvests: Sinda Couple Thrives Through Climate-Smart Farming

In the heart of Sinda District, a hardworking couple from Kampamule Agriculture Camp is proving that determination, unity, and smart farming can transform lives.

Micheal Lungu and his wife Estella Phiri Lungu have become a shining example of success after embracing Climate Smart Agriculture-CSA and agroforestry.

What started as a small initiative in 2020 under the Zambia Forestry and Landscape Programme has now grown into a thriving farming enterprise.

Today, the couple proudly cultivates over 11 hectares of maize, 2 hectares of soya beans, 1 hectare of sunflower, and 1 lima of beans a remarkable achievement driven by dedication and the right support systems.

Their farm recently hosted an exposure field day at Kazipalile Farmer Field School, attracting farmers and extension officers from camps including Kafwele, Chitawe, and Seya.

The event showcased how sustainable farming practices can increase productivity while conserving the environment.

The Lungus attribute their success to the support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Green Economy and Enviroment through the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP, which has empowered farmers with climate-smart techniques that improve soil health, boost yields, and promote agroforestry.

Speaking during the visit, Principal Agricultural Officer Kelvin Chinama emphasized that such exposure visits are key to encouraging farmers to adopt sustainable practices that enhance productivity and support environmental conservation.

The couple has a simple but powerful message: both men and women must embrace Climate Smart Agriculture because it works.

Their journey is not just about farming it’s about resilience, innovation, and building a better future.

Their story is proof that when farmers adapt, communities thrive.
