Katete Farmers Lead the Way in Climate-Smart Agriculture

Chipata, Zambia-08 January 2026-Katete District is emerging as a model for Climate-Smart Agriculture-CSA under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP, with Farmer Field Schools-FFS driving adoption of sustainable farming practices.During a recent joint monitoring visit, Eastern Provincial Agricultural Coordinator Victor Zulu commended farmers and extension officers for their commitment to CSA.

The visit, conducted with EP-JSLP staff and district agricultural officers, aimed to assess progress in sustainable land management.
Mr. Zulu noted that Farmer Field School groups are increasingly adopting climate-smart practices, supporting the province’s goal of building resilient agricultural landscapes.

And Katete District Agricultural Coordinator Kabange Masenga praised the FFS approach for improving farmer engagement, knowledge retention, and practical application.

“We are proud of the progress made through Farmer Field Schools, which bridge the gap between theory and practice. We will continue providing support to expand climate-smart practices across Katete,” he said.

Meanwhile, EP-JSLP District Project Officer Chewe Kabwe highlighted that the programme equips farmers with practical knowledge to improve soil health, boost productivity, and promote long-term environmental sustainability.

Farmer Joseph Phiri from Kameta Camp said the practical demonstrations have transformed farming practices.
“Comparing methods in demonstration plots helps us see what works. Mulching and crop rotation have improved our soils, and we are already applying these practices at home,” he said.

In conclusion, Mr. Zulu encouraged continued collaboration among provincial, district, and community stakeholders and urged documentation of farmer innovations for wider replication.

He reminded farmers that resilience in agriculture requires continuous learning and adaptation.

EP-JSLP is implemented by the Government of Zambia through the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, with support from the World Bank.
