Lusowe Farmer Field School Showcases Agroforestry Success in Petauke

The EP-JSLP team recently visited and interviewed Peter Mumba, an adopted lead farmer from Lusowe Farmer Field School, located in Lusowe Agricultural Camp, Nyika Block, under Chief Kalindawalo in Petauke District.
Mr. Mumba has shown remarkable success in Climate-Smart Agriculture-CSA through his innovative implementation of agroforestry practices.
The field school provides a hands-on learning platform where farmers gain practical skills in crop production, soil conservation, and climate resilience.
A standout feature has been the promotion of agroforestry, particularly the integration of beneficial tree species such as Gliricidia sepium and Musangu, which naturally enrich the soil.
Mr. Mumba has taken this practice to the next level by relying on tree leaves as natural fertilizer instead of synthetic inputs.
This approach has not only improved soil fertility but also boosted his crop yields, illustrating the tangible benefits of sustainable and climate-smart farming methods.
His success serves as a practical example for other farmers, highlighting how dedication and continuous learning can transform agricultural productivity while protecting the environment.
These achievements have been made possible under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP with support from the World Bank, fostering sustainable agricultural practices across Petauke District.
