Nyimba Farmers Strengthen Climate-Smart Agriculture Through Farmer-to-Farmer Learning

Lead and follower farmers in Mchimadzi Agricultural Camp in Nyimba District today participated in a farmer-to-farmer exposure visit aimed at promoting Climate-Smart Agriculture-CSA practices.

The visit was hosted by lead farmer Charles Tembo of Mchimadzi Farmer Field School, who has successfully adopted CSA practices such as ripping and agroforestry under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP.

Mr. Tembo has cultivated about 10 hectares of maize, soya beans, and other crops using ripping, demonstrating sustainable farming methods that improve soil health and crop productivity.

Mr. Tembo described hosting fellow farmers as motivating and encouraged others to adopt climate-smart agriculture technologies.

He also appreciated the support from the Ministry of Agriculture Zambia and the EP-JSLP programme, which is supported by the World Bank and implemented with nested partners Community Markets for Conservation-COMACO and BioCarbon Partners-BCP.

Speaking during the event, Principal Agricultural Officer for Eastern Province in the Ministry of Agriculture Kelvin Chinama said the objective of such exposure visits is to encourage farmers to adopt climate-smart agriculture practices that help conserve soil, enhance productivity, and promote agroforestry for carbon retention.

Meanwhile, Nyimba District Agricultural Coordinator Mwaaba Lubasi disclosed that about 60 percent of lead and follower farmers in the district have adopted CSA farming technologies under the EP-JSLP initiative.

Nyimba District Senior Agricultural Officer Faindani Nyirenda also attended the event together with EP-JSLP Communications Officer Creavat Chituta, Chief Ndake’s representative Amani Njobvu, agricultural officers, and farmers from various Farmer Field Schools.

The farmer-to-farmer exposure initiative aims to strengthen peer learning by exposing farmers to practical CSA practices such as conservation farming, crop diversification, agroforestry, and climate-resilient crop varieties.

The activity is expected to strengthen farmer networks, increase adoption of climate-smart technologies, and enhance soil health, water conservation, and climate resilience among small-scale farmers in Eastern Province.
