From 1 Hectare to 26: Independent Farmer David Mwale Inspires CSA Adoption in Vubwi District

Through the adoption of ripping and other Climate Smart Agriculture-CSA practices, David Mwale of Mbande Agricultural Camp in Vubwi District is leading by example and inspiring fellow farmers across the district.
Notably, Mr. Mwale is not a beneficiary under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme-EP-JSLP, but an experienced farmer who independently adopted CSA practices over the years.

His success is now serving as a valuable source of knowledge and inspiration, as he actively shares his experience with farmers participating in Farmer Field Schools and beyond.
Starting with just 1 hectare of maize under CSA, Mr. Mwale has transformed his farming enterprise into a thriving operation.
Today, he cultivates 8 hectares of maize and 18 hectares of soya beans, with crop rotation at the core of his farming system demonstrating the power of sustainable practices in boosting productivity and resilience.
During a recent field visit, the EP-JSLP, together with the Ministry of Agriculture through the National Agricultural Information Services-NAIS, conducted information collection and dissemination activities in selected districts, including Vubwi.
The team, led by District Agricultural Coordinator Philimon Lungu, engaged with Mr. Mwale, who showcased his strong commitment to CSA implementation, with 18 hectares of soya beans and 7 hectares of maize currently under cultivation this season.

The interaction highlighted the growing importance of peer learning and farmer-to-farmer knowledge sharing as key drivers for scaling up CSA adoption and promoting sustainable agricultural growth in the district.
Mr. Mwale continues to motivate other farmers by demonstrating the tangible benefits of adopting improved farming technologies.
He is actively sharing the knowledge and skills he has gained over the years with fellow farmers in Mbande Agricultural Camp and beyond, strengthening community resilience and productivity.
His journey stands as a powerful reminder that even beyond structured programmes, experienced farmers can play a critical role in advancing Climate Smart Agriculture and transforming livelihoods.
