Chief Chitungulu Signs Landmark Community Climate Action Plan, Strengthening Local Climate Governance in Lumezi

The Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Program-EPJSLP continues to advance its objective of promoting sustainable livelihoods, improving natural resource governance, and reducing emissions through inclusive community-led approaches.
In Lumezi District, Chief Chitungulu Chiefdom of the Chewa people successfully hosted a multi-stakeholder engagement that marked a key milestone in the formation of the Community Emissions Reduction Coordination Committee-CERCC and the initiation of the Community Emissions Reduction Performance Plan-CERPP.

The meeting brought together the EPJSLP team, the Forest Department, Lumezi Town Council, the Zambia Community-Based Natural Resources Management Association-CBNRM, and BioCarbon Partners-BCP.
It began with a courtesy call to His Royal Highness Chief Chitungulu, followed by a community sensitization session to enhance understanding of the CERCC and CERPP processes and their benefits to the chiefdom.
The process was participatory and inclusive, with representatives elected from diverse stakeholder groups across the chiefdom, ensuring gender balance and broad representation. Following the elections,
His Royal Highness formally endorsed the newly formed committee through a signing ceremony.
This exercise forms part of the broader EPJSLP rollout across all chiefdoms in Eastern Province.
In his remarks, the traditional leader expressed appreciation for the coordinated process and encouraged members to uphold unity, accountability, and mutual respect in implementing the programme.
