By Hope Bwalya-ZANIS
Acting Chief Nyamphande of the Nsenga people in Lusangazi District has urged communities to remain steadfast in the fight against climate change and deforestation, stressing that sustainable environmental conservation requires long-term commitment, patience, and collective action.
Speaking during the signing of the Chiefdom Emissions Reduction Coordinating Committee-CERCC agreement under the Eastern Province Jurisdiction Sustainable Landscape Project (EP-JSLP), the traditional leader reaffirmed the importance of protecting forests and promoting climate-smart practices to secure a sustainable future for generations to come.
Meanwhile, EP-JSLP Petauke and Lusangazi District Project Officer Chipango Lukungu said the newly established CERCC will provide the structures and systems needed to implement the Benefit Sharing Plan (BSP) and facilitate the management of future carbon credit revenues generated through climate-smart agriculture, forest conservation, and improved cookstove initiatives.
And newly elected CERCC Chairperson Sarah Sakala welcomed the initiative, noting that it will empower communities with knowledge, skills, and practical alternatives to address deforestation, reduce charcoal burning, and promote sustainable energy use.
The committee is expected to play a key role in coordinating emissions reduction efforts, supporting forest conservation, facilitating access to carbon credit benefits, and promoting sustainable livelihoods and climate resilience across Nyamphande Chiefdom.
