Mambwe Communities Champion Climate-Smart Energy for a Sustainable Future

The Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EP-JSLP) team, comprising officers from the Forestry Department, the Ministry of Agriculture, and EP-JSLP, led by Eastern Province Principal Forest Officer Catherine Zulu, today continued monitoring the implementation of the Cold Season Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) Energy Data Collection exercise in Mambwe D
istrict.
The team visited Elida Village in Jumbe Agriculture Camp of Chief Jumbe’s Chiefdom, where they observed encouraging progress in the adoption of climate-smart cooking technologies.
Communities are demonstrating a proactive commitment to sustainable energy production and environmental stewardship by using both fixed mud and improved metal cookstoves, while a few households continue to rely on the traditional three-stone fire arrangement.
The monitoring exercise highlighted the growing adoption of cleaner and more efficient cooking technologies, which contribute to reduced fuelwood consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improved household well-being.
These efforts also support the collection of reliable data for the MRV system, which is essential for measuring climate impacts and informing sustainable landscape management interventions.
Such climate-smart initiatives reflect the objectives of the EP-JSLP in promoting sustainable landscape management, strengthening the MRV system, and delivering credible emissions reduction results that benefit both communities and the environment.
