Vubwi Forestry Officer Calls for Stronger Forest Conservation
Vubwi District Forest Officer Rabbeca Mwale has urged farmers and communities to protect forests, practise smart agriculture and promote sustainable use of natural resources to reduce carbon emissions.
Speaking on the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EPJSLP) EPJSLP live radio talk show on Kwathu FM, Ms. Mwale encouraged early burning, tree planting and the use of improved cookstoves instead of traditional three-stone fires.
She said forests are vital for water conservation and soil fertility, while improved cookstoves can reduce pressure on forests, save households time and money, and improve health.
The DFO also called for stronger action against deforestation and cross-border illegal activities, particularly those linked to charcoal production and the opening of agricultural fields in border communities.
She however encouraged residents to plant fast-growing trees such as Musangu and Gliricidia.
“We also have to deal with the issues that cause forest deforestation, especially in Vubwi where we are bordering Malawi,” said Ms. Mwale.
