Thirty-one Honorary Forest Officers (HFOs) have been trained under the World Bank funded Eastern Province Jurisdiction Sustainable Landscape Programme (EPJSLP).
Drawn from Lusangazi, Nyimba and Katete districts, the officers will sensitise communities on natural resource conservation, strengthen forest management, conduct patrols and enforce laws against deforestation.
Petauke District Commissioner Wachepa Phiri said the training will support the Forestry Department in tackling illegal charcoal production, unsustainable timber harvesting and agricultural expansion.
EPJSLP District Project Officer Chipango Lukungu added that the officers will help manage Community Forest Management Groups and promote regeneration of forests.
Nyimba District Commissioner Paul Daka, one of the trained HFOs, urged colleagues to uphold integrity and avoid activities that undermine their mandate.
The programme aims to strengthen conservation within community forest groups across Lusangazi, Nyimba and Katete chiefdoms.
