CHIEF KAPICHIRA COMMITS TO CERCC & CERPP IMPLEMENTATION AS CLIMATE ACTION GAINS MOMENTUM

His Royal Highness Chief Kapichira of the Chewa speaking people of Lundazi has expressed strong support for the establishment of Chiefdom Emissions Reduction Coordinating Committees-CERCC and the development of Chiefdom Emissions Reduction Performance Plans-CERPP following a high-level engagement held at his palace.
The delegation, led by under the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Program-EP-JSLP Environmental and Social Inclusion Officer Godfrey Phiri accompanied by the Provincial Chief Traditional Affairs representative William Phiri, paid a courtesy call on Chief Kapichira to officially introduce the initiative and discuss its implementation framework.
During the meeting, the EP-JSLP team provided a detailed briefing on the purpose of the CERCC, highlighting its role in coordinating emissions reduction activities and ensuring inclusive participation of key stakeholder groups within the chiefdom.

His Royal Highness warmly welcomed the initiative and pledged full support, committing to take a leading role in sensitizing nominated members drawn from various community structures ahead of the committee formation process.
This followed his review of the CERCC and CERPP guiding handout shared during the engagement.
The traditional leader further expressed optimism about the upcoming carbon revenue disbursements, noting the importance of ensuring that such resources are directed toward meaningful and sustainable community development initiatives.
He also highlighted that a significant portion of land has already been set aside and conserved under his leadership, expressing interest in having it formally included under the Agriculture, Forestry, and Other Land Use-AFOLU framework.
He requested technical guidance on the procedures required for its recognition and integration into the programme.
Additionally, His Royal Highness extended an invitation for the project team to visit the conserved area before leaving the chiefdom, reinforcing his commitment to sustainable land management and climate action.
The engagement marks another important step in strengthening chiefdom-level governance structures and advancing inclusive, community-driven emissions reduction efforts.
